Killhope lead mine at sunrise

The mining of lead ore took place here from 1818 until 1910 when production ceased, although it was briefly reopened in 1916. It lay derelict for over 60 years & fell into decay until the local council started a restoration programme in 1980.

This mine in a remote part of Weardale was first in operation in the 18th century, initially mining for iron ore but this was not as productive as had been hoped so they later switched to mining for fluorspar until the closure in 1999.
